  • If you find that your water pressure is low and you own a water softener system, check an outside faucet. If the pressure is good outside, then the problem is usually the water softener. There is a bypass valve that can be turned off in order to bypass the system. If this does not work, check any inside faucets that have screens. When a softener goes out, it usually passes a sandy material into the pipes which can clog up the screens. If the outside pressure is low, then you will need to contact the Public Works Secretary at (512) 556-8315 between 7:00am and 4:00pm, Monday - Friday, or after hours at the Police Department (512) 556-6235.
    Departments-Public Works
  • The water that runs from your faucet or shower may occasionally become discolored due to water main breaks or testing fire hydrants. Do not be alarmed if your water is suddenly discolored. This water is still safe to drink. The discoloration is caused by an unusually high sediment content, which results from sudden changes in the system. When the cause of the problem is corrected, the sediments will be removed from the system. Notify the Public Works Secretary that there is a problem by calling (512) 556-8315 Monday - Friday between 7:00am and 4:00pm, or (512) 556-6235 at the Police Department after normal business hours.

  • The Street Department is responsible for maintaining the flow of water through ditches in public right-of-ways and easements receiving storm water runoff. This system consists of inlets or catch basins, open channels and ditches, underground pipelines, and detention ponds. City crews periodically clean the banks of the drainage ditches and remove any obstacles obstructing the flow of water through the ditch. Residents are urged not to dispose of leaves or grass clippings into open drainage systems or to place any debris in a location that would impede the flow of water into the underground system. Such action may result in serious flooding. Primarily, your responsibility is to help eliminate the amount of debris deposited in the ditches or on the ditch banks that can cause flooding. This waste can accumulate in and pollute areas adjacent to the ditches, streams, and lakes, diminishing their aesthetic value. In the event of flooding due to blockage of the storm drains system or the drain is overgrown and needs repair, residents may call the Public Works Secretary between 7:00am and 4:00pm, Monday - Friday at (512) 556-8315. In the event of a flooding emergency at any other time, call (512) 556-6235 at the Police Department.

Departments-Animal Shelter

9
  • Please understand that surrendering your pet to an animal shelter should always be a last resort.  Please understand that Staff will do their very best to make room to accept your pet but it will not be the day you call.  We have to be mindful of current space in the shelter if we want to continue on our goal of not having to euthanize animals due to overcrowding. Make sure you allow time to rehome or surrender as it will not be a same day service.  Rehoming the animal outside of the shelter would be better for the animal's mental wellbeing and is always preferred.  Animal shelters were not created to accept owned animals to rehome but rather to assist with lost/found/stray animals as a service of public safety.  The staff can give you suggestions on ways to safety rehome your pet outside of an animal shelter while you wait for space to allow us to intake or offer support/solutions to possibly help or correct the issue leading you to considering rehoming in the first place.  Animals with severe behavioral issues or bite histories will not be accepted into the adoption program.

    Departments-Animal Shelter
  • If we have one of your animals, please let us know as soon as possible. Animals on impound are held for three days if not wearing any identification and for five days if wearing identification (identification would include a rabies tag, a personalized tag, or a microchip). Proof of ownership is required to reclaim any animal, and a current rabies vaccination must be provided on all dogs and cats. After the Impound period is complete, the animal becomes the property of the Shelter, and the animal will undergo an adoption evaluation. If an owner fails to reclaim their animal, they are still responsible for all fees involved.

  • There is no greater way to help Animal Shelters than to adopt.  You are saving the life of an animal that most likely finds itself at the shelter at no real fault of its own.  Most animals that find themselves at the shelter, came to us as strays with unknown backgrounds. Staff will use their training and knowledge to give their best guess on breed, age, temperament, and health. We do not have a Veterinarian on staff, but we are trained to watch for signs of illness. We will be completely honest with any illness or behavior issues we notice in any of the animals we have up for adoption. We will also try our best to explain the breed’s activity levels to ensure that this animal is a good fit for your lifestyle.  We cannot guarantee the health or temperament of any animals we have available for adoption.  All dogs available for adoption will have age-appropriate distemper/parvo vaccinations, Bordetella vaccinations if old enough, general deworming, and will be treated for fleas and ticks. Our dogs have been tested for heartworms if over 6 months of age. Rabies Vaccinations are required to be done within seven days of adoption, and the spay /neuter is required to be done within thirty days of adoption. Both are at the expense of the adopter if not done prior to adoption. All cats are given age-appropriate distemper vaccinations, general deworming, and are treated for fleas and ticks. Our cats have not been tested for Feline Leukemia or Feline AIDS virus. Rabies Vaccinations are required to be done within seven days of adoption, and the spay /neuter is required to be done within thirty days of adoption. Both are at the expense of the adopter if not done prior to adoption.

It is required that you bring a crate or cage when adopting a cat.  Cat adoption fee is $20.  Dog adoption fee is $30.  We do recommend calling before driving out to make sure the animal is still available and not currently in foster.

    Departments-Animal Shelter
  • Once an animal has completed its impound time or it is surrendered by its’ owner, it can be evaluated for adoption, sent to a rescue partner, or humanely euthanized. Public safety is one of our main priorities.  With that being said no animal with a known bite history can be placed up for adoption through our facility.  Those animal can be sent to a rescue partner.  All other animals would have to pass our adoption criteria to be placed into the adoption program.  In balancing the welfare of the animals with our responsibility to the public we recognize that not all animals are suitable for placement through of facility.  When the difficult decision is made to end an animal’s life, we perform compassionate euthanasia.

For an animal to meet our adoption criteria is must NOT:

*Have a bite history with humans

*Show aggression to other animals beyond what we determine to be reasonable and safe

*Have a medical issue that requires care beyond what we can provide

*Become overly stress and destructive while house in a shelter environment

  • We do not have a set hold time on any animal. It is all on a case by case basis. We have housed some animals for over 6 months. It all depends of the health and temperament of the animal. Animals on Impound are held for three (if animal is not wearing any identification) to five (if animal is wearing identification) days for owners to reclaim. After that time, the animals are evaluated for adoption.

Lampasas Solar Eclipse 2024

23
  • On Monday, April 8, 2024, there will be a total solar eclipse, and Lampasas, TX, is in the direct path of totality. In a solar eclipse, the moon gets between the Sun and Earth. In a total solar eclipse, people in the path of totality see the Sun’s bright disk totally covered by the moon for a short time. Totality begins at approximately 1:35 p.m. and lasts about 4 minutes 23.5 seconds.

    Lampasas Solar Eclipse 2024
  • Looking directly at the sun is unsafe except during the brief total phase of a solar eclipse (“totality”) when the moon entirely blocks the sun’s bright face, which will happen only within the narrow path of totality.

The only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses” or handheld solar viewers. Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are unsafe for looking at the sun; they transmit thousands of times too much sunlight. Refer to the American Astronomical Society (AAS) Reputable Vendors of Solar Filters & Viewers page for a list of manufacturers and authorized dealers of eclipse glasses and handheld solar viewers verified to be compliant with the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard for such products.

  • Predicting how many visitors will come to Lampasas to view the Eclipse is difficult. The City is basing the expected number of visitors on historical numbers from the Solar Eclipse in 2017. Cities in the path of totality in 2017 for the duration that Lampasas is in 2024 saw a mass influx of thousands of visitors to their town. As long as weather permits, Lampasas can likely predict:

    • Thousands of visitors, double or triple the City’s population
    • Large-scale events happening in nearby cities will draw crowds to Lampasas
    • Hotels, AirBnBs and RV Parks will reach capacity
    • Residents and Businesses need to be prepared
    Lampasas Solar Eclipse 2024
  • The City is undergoing internal planning and public outreach to ensure we are prepared for the Solar Eclipse 2024 event.

The County, the Sheriff’s Department, the City of Lampasas’ Police and Fire Departments, and Hamilton EMS are working concurrently to address public safety and prepare for the event by gathering information, planning, managing logistics, gathering supplies, and training.

The County and the City are doing public outreach to gather information and ensure the public is prepared for the Solar Eclipse event by hosting town halls. They are also working on determining public viewing sites and handling logistics for the week of the event, including securing port-o-potties, road closures, security, and more.

The Lampasas County Chamber of Commerce and Lampasas Economic Development Corporation (LEDC) are contacting businesses to ensure they’re prepared for the Solar Eclipse event. The Chamber and the LEDC host quarterly business roundtables and targeted industry meetings. If you’d like to know more, please get in touch with the Chamber at 512-556-5172.

  • The decision to stay open is up to each business. Non-essential businesses may not need to be open. Will your employees be able to get to work? Walk through your daily activities and think about what may not be available on April 8 due to the influx of people. How well will your business operate if you need internet, cell phone service, or even gas?

If you choose to stay open, please ensure you are prepared. Also, this is your opportunity to think outside the box for businesses that remain open. Consider what services and/or products may not be readily available and provide them to improve your customers' experience.

    Lampasas Solar Eclipse 2024
  • For a total solar eclipse to take place, the moon passes between the sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the sun. Weather permitting, people located in the center of the moon’s shadow when it hits Earth will experience a total eclipse. The sky will become very dark for a few minutes, as if it were night. Normally, when looking at the sun, you can only see the photosphere, the bright surface.

However, extending about 5,000 km above the photosphere is the region of the solar atmosphere called the chromosphere. It is only seen during total solar eclipses, or with sophisticated telescopes, and its red and pinkish color gives the blackened moon a thin halo of color against the greyish corona. People in the path of a total solar eclipse can also see the sun’s corona, the outer atmosphere, which is otherwise usually obscured by the bright face of the sun. A total solar eclipse is the only type of solar eclipse where viewers can briefly remove their eclipse glasses, during the few moments when the moon is completely blocking the sun.

Departments-Public Works-Water Service Line Inventory

9
  • Lead is a naturally occurring metallic element found in air, soil, and water. It was historically used in gasoline, paint, ceramics, batteries, and plumbing because it is pliable and resists leaks. Lead’s symbol, Pb, comes from the Latin word for plumbing. While lead is still found in some products, it has been banned from plumbing materials since 1986 under the U.S. Safe Drinking Water Act. The definition of "lead-free" was tightened in 2014, reducing allowable lead content to a maximum of 0.25% for pipes and fixtures.

    Departments-Public Works-Water Service Line Inventory
  • Lead is highly toxic, even in small amounts. Long-term exposure can lead to brain and kidney damage, blood disorders, and developmental problems, particularly in young children and pregnant women. Children are more vulnerable to lead exposure, which can cause central and peripheral nervous system damage, learning disabilities, shorter stature, impaired hearing, and impaired formation and function of blood cells. For infants consuming formula mixed with contaminated water, the EPA estimates that drinking water can contribute 40-60% of their lead exposure.

    Departments-Public Works-Water Service Line Inventory
  • Lead is typically not present in water when it leaves the treatment facility or in water mains. However, it can enter drinking water through lead service lines or household plumbing, especially in homes built before 1988. Lead can leach into water or break off into particles when service lines or plumbing contain lead materials.

    EPA Lead

    Departments-Public Works-Water Service Line Inventory
  • No level of lead is considered safe for consumption, as it can accumulate in the body over time. Households with pregnant women, infants, or young children are at greater risk for the harmful effects of lead at even low levels. It is recommended to take steps to eliminate or reduce exposure wherever possible.

    Departments-Public Works-Water Service Line Inventory
  • Lead in drinking water is colorless, tasteless, and odorless. The only way to know for sure is to have your water tested by a certified laboratory. Contact City of Lampasas or a licensed plumber to determine if the pipe that connects your home to the water main (called a service line) is made of lead. When lead service lines are present, they represent the greatest source of lead exposure in drinking water.

    Departments-Public Works-Water Service Line Inventory
    • Use your filter properly. Using a filter can reduce lead in drinking water. If you use a filter, make sure you use a filter certified to remove lead. Read the directions to learn how to properly install and use your cartridge and when to replace it. Using the cartridge after it has expired can make it less effective at removing lead. Do not run hot water through the filter.
    • Clean your aerator. Regularly clean your faucet’s screen (also known as an aerator). Sediment, debris, and lead particles can collect in your aerator. If lead particles are caught in the aerator, lead can get into your water.
    • Use cold water. Use only cold water for drinking, cooking and making baby formula. Hot water from the tap can contain higher levels of lead. Remember, boiling water does not remove lead from water.
    • Run your water. The more time water has been sitting in pipes, the more lead it may contain. Before drinking, flush your home’s pipes by running the tap, taking a shower, doing laundry, or doing a load of dishes. The amount of time to run the water will depend on whether your home has a lead service line or not, and the length of the lead service line. Residents should contact their water utility for recommendations about flushing times in their community.
    • Learn if you have a lead service line. Find out if the pipe that connects your home to the water main (called a service line) is made from lead. Ask your water utility or if your utility does not have information a licensed plumber may be able to assist.
    • Learn about construction in your neighborhood. If you have a lead service line, you should be aware of any nearby construction or maintenance work that could disturb the line. Ground tremors from construction may suddenly cause more lead to be released from a lead service line in the area.
    • Have your water tested. Contact your water utility to have your water tested and to learn more about the lead levels in your drinking water.
    Departments-Public Works-Water Service Line Inventory
  • On October 8th, the Biden-Harris Administration issued a final rule requiring drinking water systems across the country to identify and replace lead pipes within 10 years. The Lead and Copper Rule Improvements (LCRI) also require more rigorous testing of drinking water and a lower threshold requiring communities to take action to protect people from lead exposure in water. In addition, the final rule improves communication within communities so that families are better informed about the risk of lead in drinking water, the location of lead pipes, and plans for replacing them.

    Departments-Public Works-Water Service Line Inventory
    • Flush the line.  Run cold water for several minutes after any disruption or work on your pipes.
    • Consider Replacement.  If you have a lead service line or plumbing, it is recommended that you replace it, particularly if you have pregnant women or young children in the home.
    • Use Filters. Until the plumbing is replaced, use a certified water filter to remove lead.
    Departments-Public Works-Water Service Line Inventory
  • Yes, lead is not absorbed through the skin, so bathing or showering in water containing lead does not pose a health risk.
